Silence in the backcountry isn't luck-it's material science. And at the heart of every premium silent hunting pack lies 3-layer brushed tricot fabric, a composite engineered for stealth, durability, and weather resistance.
But what exactly is it-and why can't you just use regular nylon?
Layer by Layer Breakdown:
Top Layer – Brushed Tricot Polyester:
Mechanically brushed to create a soft, fuzzy surface that absorbs sound waves. Unlike crinkly ripstop, it moves silently against tree bark, dry grass, or your own gear. It also accepts high-resolution camo printing without bleeding.
Middle Layer – Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU) Membrane:
A microporous film laminated between layers, providing 5,000mm+ hydrostatic head waterproofing while remaining breathable. Unlike PU coatings, TPU won't crack after UV exposure or repeated folding.
Base Layer – 300D Ripstop Grid Oxford:
Woven with reinforced crosshatch threads to resist tears from branches, rifle barrels, or sharp antlers. This layer carries structural load during sewing and field use.
Why Most Factories Fail:
Many suppliers skip the TPU layer to cut costs, or use single-layer "brushed" polyester that delaminates after washing. Worse, they apply camo via screen printing-stiffening the fabric and reintroducing noise.
At GAF Outdoor, we laminate all three layers in-house under controlled heat and pressure. Every roll undergoes Martindale abrasion testing (50,000+ cycles) and acoustic decibel measurement (<25 dB at 1m distance).
Our European clients require this fabric as standard-not an upgrade.
